Over 40 old and new friends joined AHTS' Gulf Coast Chapter for National Trails Day at Blakeley Historic State Park in Spanish Fort on June 7th. It was a near record hot day but that didn't dampen spirits as the group took to the trails and learned about the park's history including the last major battle of the Civil War where they hiked along some of the best preserved breastworks and redoubts in the country. The group then headed down to the 2nd largest river delta in the country, the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, for a cool, shaded walk beneath the Spanish moss draped oaks which was the home of a town that once rivaled Mobile in size and as a seaport in the early 1800s. State Leave No Trace Adcovate Skip Essman gave the group a presentation on LNT ethics and practics and afterwards, it was a lunch of hot dogs, drinks, chips, and a fantastic Dutch oven desert prepared by Marie Arnott! Big thanks go out to Skip, Marie, and Marion and Emily Campbell for their help with the event and thank you to park director JoAnn Flirt and her staff for the hospitality.

Fresh Air Family - Conecuh National Forest (Spring 08)
It seems like only yesterday when AHTS first received a call from Verna Gates that she was creating a new organization dedicated to promoting getting families out into the "fresh air". Today, Fresh Air Family is one of the most successful organizations in the state, holding events for families with kids of all ages from Huntsville to Mobile. AHTS was proud to join them for their recent venture into the Conecuh National Forest and looks forward to working with Fresh Air Family in the future. Kiosk Clean Up-Trail of the Panther (Spring 08)
Recently, Johnny Miller and Erik Douglas did clean up work at the AHTS kiosk on the Florida - Alabama state line. This is the official starting point of the new Great Eastern Trail, the entrance into Alabama for the Eastern Continental Trail from Florida to Canada, and the beginning of what will be known as the Trail of the Panther that will lead to the Conecuh National Forest.
